About this training
PLEASE NOTE! To attend this training, the student must hold a valid VGB and a valid Air Cargo Employee certificate (11.2.3.9).
The Air Cargo Screener + X-Ray Operator Air Cargo & Mail course is a specialized four-day training course for employees who are responsible for screening air cargo & mail using X-Ray equipment.
During the training, you will learn how an X-Ray machine works, which safety measures are important, and how to correctly interpret X-Ray images. Among other things, you will learn to recognize colors, shapes, and densities and to assess suspicious or unusual images.
In addition to theory, there is a strong focus on practical training. You will practice operating the X-Ray machine and interpreting various images. You will also learn how to act when an image is not sufficiently clear and when additional screening is required.
An Air Cargo Screener + X-Ray Operator Air Cargo & Mail has an important responsibility within aviation security. Recognizing prohibited items and other suspicious contents therefore requires proper training as well as regularly maintaining the knowledge and skills acquired.
Who is this course for?
This course is intended for employees who screen air cargo using X-Ray equipment and who need to be trained as an Air Cargo Screener + X-Ray Operator Air Cargo & Mail.
Prerequisites & admission requirements
To participate in this training, the participant must have:
- A valid VGB (Certificate of No Objection)
- A valid Air Cargo Employee (A) certificate
At the start of the training, the participant must be able to present a valid VGB and a valid form of identification.
Training duration
- Basic training: 4 days
The training consists of a combination of theory and practical exercises.
Course material
The training is based on the National Civil Aviation Security Training Programme (NOBB) and the applicable European and national regulations.
The required course materials are included.
CITO examination
After successfully completing the basic training, you must take the mandatory CITO Image Interpretation examinations for CARGO and MAIL.
The CITO examinations are administered separately. The examination location and schedule will be arranged in consultation with the candidate.
The costs of the CITO examinations are not included in the training fee.
After passing the examinations, you will receive a CITO certificate. This certificate is valid for 3 years.

To keep their authorization and skills up to date, every Air Cargo Screener + X-Ray Operator must also spend at least 6 hours on Image Interpretation Tests every 6 months.
